How to get noticed and succeed as a Developer in NZ

The development space in NZ is going crazy. If you’re a Java or .Net developer then lucky you, you’re in demand. Here’s some tips on how to get noticed and how to up your chance of succeeding in this job space.

  1. Make sure your LinkedIn is up to date. Ensure you have details (without giving away the crown jewels) of your work and current projects. It’s important to mention the technology that you’re using. Especially if you’re using the latest technology stack. Make sure you put your certifications in. Whilst it’s only a slip of paper, it also shows that you’ve been committed to higher learning. Skills and Endorsements are certainly attractive and they paint a picture of your capabilities. Endorse other people and they’ll endorse you.
  2. Make sure your CV is up to date and is in the right format. Short and succinct. We’re not looking for Lord of the Rings. Have a look at this template. Remember recruiters and hiring managers skim and speed read. If it’s waffle, it may put off a prospective employer. Make sure you have key words in your CV ie. your tech skills. We use technology to sift out the good ones!
  3. Github and stackoverflow. It’s not all about the job. More and more recruiters and hiring managers look to see how active you are in the community. So build a presence there. It will up your chances of getting noticed and it will show employers that coding is your passion. They’re not looking for mindless robots!
  4. If you’re not a contractor try and stay put. If you jump around you’ll get the “mercenary for hire” tag. Companies are looking for commitment and you’ll limit your chance if you’re pimping yourself out to the highest bidder.
  5. Work on your communication skills. Not every employer is looking for a non-talking coder. A personality goes a long way! It also helps if you show how passionate you are about your chosen trade. Smile at interviews! It sounds simple but it’s very powerful.
  6. Get some big brands behind you. It’s not all about the money! Employers take note of where you’ve worked. So be picky when you choose your next assignment.
  7. Be realistic with the $$$. Whilst you’re in demand, employers have a budget. Don’t go crazy with your salary expectations, but likewise don’t sell yourself short.
